We’ve been fortunate to work with a number of families on bathroom renovations, and this project is one of our favorites. From the reclaimed materials to the Japanese soaking tub, it’s a unique guest bath for a longtime client of ours.
The Japanese soaking tub is much deeper than the typical tub, making it ideal for relaxing in a steamy bath. The West has discovered the beauty and comfort of Japanese bathing traditions, and many are choosing to use these to create a bathroom retreat. These tubs are generally smaller, but the depth makes up for it and will go up to neck level. This one in particular is 28 inches deep and holds over 200 gallons of water when full. It was part of a complete guest bathroom remodel.
The Before
The house is a 1800s stone farmhouse that had an outdated bathroom. We stripped it to the studs and got to work! With a large bathroom like this, they chose to have the shower on the right with the tub separate and on the left.

The bathroom can be more than a utility; it can be an oasis. Our clients’ old black and white tiled tub and shower didn’t fit that feel.
In Progress
Because of this unique tub choice, we needed to create a special drainage and overflow system. We chose a Schluter system as the foundation, then finished it with stone to complement the other natural materials used.

The tub isn’t the only statement in this bathroom, though. The counter is made from 150-year-old white oak we reclaimed from a factory floor in New York, with hammered copper sinks.

The Finishing Touches
As the project neared completion, we added the last of the stonework, faucet handles, and other finishing touches.

We enjoyed working with this family and bringing ideas for their guest bathroom to life. Are you looking to refresh your bathroom? We’d love to talk with you.
